The origin of SMEE can be traced back to the Department of Radar Technology founded in 1960, which was renamed the Department of Electronic Mechanism and the School of Electronic Mechanism in 1979 and 1994, respectively. In 1999, the School of Electronic Mechanism, the Department of Detection and Instrumentation, and three teaching and research offices from the School of Electronic Engineering (Industrial Automation, Automatic Control, and Electrical Technology) merged into SMEE.
SMEE incorporates Departments of Electronic Mechanism, Industrial Design, Automatic Control, Electrical Engineering, Measurement & Control Engineering and Instrument, and Electronic Packaging, the Institute of Mechano-Electronic Science and Technology, the Key Laboratory of Electronic Equipment Structure Design of the Ministry of Education (MOE), the Key Laboratory of Space Solar Power Station of Shaanxi Province, the National “111” Project Base for Electronic Equipment Electromechanical Coupling Theory and Technology, the International Science and Technology Cooperation Base of International Joint Research Center for Complex Systems of Shaanxi Province, Intelligent Manufacturing and Industrial Big Data Research Center of Xidian University, Shaanxi Innovative Industrial Design Center and the National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Comprehensive Engineering Training.
SMEE has 227 faculty and staff members, of whom there are 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 distinguished professor of the Chang Jiang Scholars Program, one recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 2 recipients of Outstanding Youth Fund of the National Foundation of China, 1 recipient of the Defense Technology Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 1 Leading Expert of National “Ten Thousands Talent Program”, 4 members of the National Teaching Steering Committee, 3 IEEE Fellows, 1 IET Fellow, 4 professors of the New Century Outstanding Talents Program of MOE, 6 professors enjoying special government allowance, 1 recipient of the Leading Scientific and Technological Innovation Talents of Shaanxi Special Support Program, 1 outstanding expert with prominent contributions in Shaanxi Province, 1 recipient of Shaanxi Provincial Talent Plan Youth Program, 1 high-level talent of Shaanxi Province, 4 German Humboldt Scholars, 58 Ph. D supervisors, 34 professors, and 91 associate professors. SMEE currently has 2,300 undergraduates and 1,100 postgraduates (1000 master degree candidates and 100 doctorate degree candidates).
SMEE has 7 bachelor programs (4 selected as National First-Class Undergraduate Major Construction Site), 11 master programs, 5 second-level disciplines authorized to offer doctorate degree, 3 first-level disciplines authorized to offer doctorate degree, and 3 post-doctoral research centers. The Mechanical Engineering is a key discipline to be constructed in Double-Top construction program, 2011 Collaborative Innovation Plan, 985 Project Innovation Platform and Project 211.
In recent years, SMEE has undertaken a great number of research projects including international projects, projects sponsored by 973 Program and 863 Program, key projects and key grant projects of the Natural Science Foundation of China (NFSC), and national defense projects, with remarkable outcomes including 1 first prize and 6 second prizes of National Science and Technology Progress Award, 10 Science and Technology Awards at ministerial and provincial levels, 1 National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award, and 2 National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Nominated Awards, and 1 Excellent Doctoral Dissertation of the Chinese Institute of Electronics. It has more than 40 papers included into ESI’s highly cited papers.
With innovation and development as the theme, discipline construction as the main line, SMEE adheres to the principle of people-oriented moral education, strengthens industry-study-research cooperation, and is striving to cultivate high-quality compound talents.
